The other weekend I spent a chilly and early morning taking pics in downtown Durham. Durham has a lot to offer. There are good restaurants, minor league baseball, and the DPAC. There’s also a lot of history and vintage landmarks dating back to the city’s booming cigarette business.
The American Tobacco area is across the street from the Durham Bulls Stadium. These old tobacco manufacturing warehouses have been converted to office spaces, wedding reception venues, and restaurants. In the middle of this area is the Lucky Strike Water Tower and Smoke Stack.
Over on another side of town is the Liggett Cigarette Sign on the side of a building.
And W.A. Slater Co.
The Oyster Bar lights up the street near the Bright Leaf Square.
One of my favorite pictures is of this neon bull sign, but I’m still trying to figure out how to get the light pole out of the middle of it.
I ended my morning in Durham with a breakfast at Monut’s Donuts. I waited in line for 45 minutes, so that should tell you how good it is. They are currently expanding to a new location that will have a bigger menu in 2015. But if you are ever in Durham or craving an amazing locally sourced breakfast, you should definitely try Monuts. Check out their facebook page, because they post their breakfast specials and donut specials each day. Their apple cider donut is amazing (but they have plain glazed every day if that’s your thing).
